The Law
THE LAW, previously released in the US as Where the Hot Wind Blows in 1959 stars Gina Lollobrigida as Marietta, the gorgeous housekeeper to Don Cesare (Pierre Brasseur), the patriarch of a small Mediterranean coastal town. Lusted after by many men, including Francesco (Yves Montand), the local crime boss, Marietta has her own desires, consisting of the poor Enrico (Marcello Mastroianni). Determined to secure the dowry that will enable her to marry Enrico, Marietta connives the men of the town by turning the tables on them using their own vicious drinking game, which they call “The Law.” 50 years after it’s initial bow, Oscilloscope Laboratories is proud to re—release The Law theatrically with newly struck 35mm prints derived from the original archival film elements and a brand new English language subtitle translation, by renowned subtitler Lenny Borger.

Reviews from Rotten Tomatoes

What it lacks in depth, 'Law of Desire' makes up in surface energy, with a lively cast, a turbulent plot and a textbook-worthy collection of case histories.

This wild man has a true talent.
Pauline Kael, New Yorker, 01.14.2013 -
The film bristles with energy and bright interludes before the lugubrious plot takes over...
